Do You! - Russell Simmons (Review)
With a foreword by Donald Trump and a nice ‘New York Times Bestseller’ stamp written across the top of the cover I had to check out this book. Flicking through the pages I saw mentions of Echkart Tolle, definitely not what I expected to be in the book of a Hip-Hop Mogul. Then again, If I had continued looking at the front cover I would have read the brief:

“12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success”
Whilst Russell might be best known for selling Phat Farm his hip-hop clothing company for $130m and starting Def-Jam records producing artists like P Diddy and Run DMC, I was surprised by the content of this book. Whilst this doesn’t contain much about achieving success in the industries of Hip Hop and Music specifically, it does look at 12 very important laws to achieve happiness and success. Isn’t that what everybody wants?
The 12 laws in the book are:
- See Your Vision and Stick With It
- Always Do You
- Get Your Mind Right
- Stop Frontin’ and Start Today
- Never Less Than Your Best
- Surround Yourself With the Right People
- There Are No Failures, Only Quitters
- Science of Success: Plant the Good Seeds
- You Can Never Get Before You Give
- Successful People Stay Open to Change
- Be Powerful, Be Heard
- Spit Truth to Power
From the laws and the title, I hope you can get a good picture of what the book is about: being true to yourself in terms of doing what you really believe in and following your real goals in life. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read on the topic and ties in closely to the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, The Buddha and other religious beliefs whilst mixing in work, goals and business.
Who knew that Russell and P Diddy do Yoga on a daily basis?
