This is a simple acronym I picked up in college which holds 5 main components required to reach any goal.

S.M.A.R.T. Specific - Measurable - Attainable - Realistic - Time-bound

Before you set out for your target, consider the following aspects of the scenario for you goal:

Specific - The goal has a well defined target for your focus such as: 'I will quit smoking'

Measurable - You must be able to quantify or measure your progress in some form.

Attainable - This goal is something possible for yourself or your group to reach for. Steer clear of the highly unlikely such as: I can open a chain of lunar hotels next month. Keep your plausibility reasonable.

Relevant - Why does this goal matter for you? Is this really a goal that relates to who you are and/or who you hope to assist? How does this goal apply to yourself and others?

Time-bound - Last but certainly not least, you should set a time of completion (or milestones for various steps of your goal) such as: I will lose 50lbs by next year.
As a goal ages your passion for it may wane with it. With out a deadline you may take an excessive or unending amount of time to reach a goal.

The S.M.A.R.T acronym was one of the more useful lessons I derived from my post secondary education, and it can apply to almost any goal. So many wonderful ideas here, very positive and enjoyable read, in return I had to share the strategy that worked well for myself. Not sure if that acronym has already turned up on here but if not take it or leave it.

Thanks for this wonderful site Glen

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL!

Hey Jackmo,

The 30 day trials work well because it takes 3-4 weeks for an action to become a habit, I believe that is why Steve picked those numbers (and they do work).

Regarding comments, I use 'brians threaded comments'.

I hope that helps, thanks again for your comments mate :)

I found your site through the comment you left at mine (thanks btw :p) and I'm impressed. You write well and seem to have acquired a lot of wisdom especially in comparison to others your age.

I saw in another post you mentioned reading Steve Palvina, what do you think of the 30 day trials for changing habits / behaviours and achieving your goals?

I'm currently trying to learn how to market my site better and set myself a 30 day challenge, after reading your traffic stats I'm definitely going to do a bit of research and testing with stumbleupon now.

Take it easy

If you'd like a tool for setting your goals, you can use this web application:

http://www.Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
A mobile version is available too.

Hello Stefan. That is great. Use those free days a week when you gotta get up at 5:30AM to extend this to entire week. I have been there and trust me, it is much easier and works perfectly if you get up every day same. It is much easier for your body to adapt this way and it will come to you naturally in the end.

It drives me crackers; this New Years resolution thing. I don't make those resolutions for the sake of making them. If theres something I want to accomplish, I set the goals when I need or want-not because its the New Year. I've even had people get put-out with me for it. Oh well. Then I even have those who tell me what they think I should have for my goal. Okie Dokie! Yah, right! I'll call my own shots, thank you very much.

Alright, getting up early, this can be a bit difficult. My problem is I tend to be more of a night-owl. My thinking is different in the night hours and is more productive when it comes to my creative side, problem solving, and just plain thinking. Its quite time. However, there are what I refer to as daytime responsibilities and those need to be done accordingly. I'm always striving for some sort of balance in various areas of my life. (I was thinking I need to get up by 4a or there abouts. I was recently reading a post which stated that it was more monetarily productive, to post by 5a or so, due to the types of ads placed at that time. I'm not sure I can do that on a consistent basis though.) Getting up early (and going to bed early of course) seems to go hand in hand with making a full-time living online. With more waking hours, you're able to make more of your day. It is a good feeling.

You've probably heard the saying - "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." Go for it Glen. Look forward to hearing how and where your journey takes you.
