How I Operate Online (A.K.A My First Video)

Glen / 78 Comments / October 5th, 2009 / Subscribe via RSS

Hey guys, today I’m pretty excited to share my first ever video. I actually hadn’t planned on doing one but my Macbook Pro arrived a couple of days ago so I wanted to test out Screenflow (I normally use Camtasia, for Windows).

The video covers which software I use on my computer and how I set-up my web browser for my online projects. If you’re not a blogger or don’t care much for making money online, you might want to skip this post. For everyone else, I hope you enjoy it.

My Computer Setup (Video)

If you can’t see the video because you’re reading this in a feed reader or in your inbox, you can click through to this post to get the goods.

One of my best friends told me I look very serious early on in the video (keep watching and you’ll see that’s not always the case) which I guess is something I can work on as I’m really not that serious. I think video is a great way for you all to connect with me on another level though so I hope it has helped “bring us closer” (so-to-speak).

If any of you make it to the last 11 seconds, you will hear the voices of me and some other awesome people. Thanks to those who sent me their sound files to make that possible: Nathalie, Dayne, Armen, Rosa, Howie, Karen, Victoria, Yavor, and Rose.

“Reading what is possibly the best book I’ve ever read…”

I guess if you include that statement in the first sentence of a blog post, people are going to ask what you’re talking about. Even so, I didn’t expect to receive so many comments and emails asking me which book I was talking about in a recent post.

Well, now I can tell you all about it. Officially launching today is a new book from my friend Tim Brownson (life coach) and co-author John Strelecky (whose books have been translated into 19 languages). With a title like How to Be Rich and Happy, I really expected this book to contain common (and honestly, boring) advice that I’ve heard 100 times before.

How wrong I was. I should have known that already though, having been a fan of Tim for over a year now. This is not your normal book, and it’s not a normal price. At just less than $100, it won’t be for everyone. And that’s OK, I don’t think it should be. This book is packed full of excellent advice and what I love most is that it is overloaded with real life success stories of people who have follow their advice and actually became rich and happy. That’s something I feel is missing from most success books.

The thing is, the people who are willing to pay that much for a book, are the people that are going to take action and actually make the title a reality. After all, it is scientifically proven that people don’t take free or even fairly cheap items that seriously. Only purchase this is you’re willing to do the exercises involved. I did personally, and they took hours of my time, but I found so many areas where I was going wrong that I was literally amazed (Just wait until you do the Values test).

Full Transparency: I will be completely honest here and say that if you purchase the book through this link, I do get a commission. However, I would never promote something I don’t believe in. Trust me, I have been sent tons of books and DVD’s through the post which you’ll never hear about through me. And to prove I’m not just promoting it because Tim is my friend and I actually value it, here’s three things I want to say:

  1. If you purchase it through me, let me know and you’ll get a free copy of Cloud Living (worth $37)
  2. There is a 12 month money-back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied with the book
  3. Do not purchase the book if you’re not willing to put the time in to complete the exercises. They’re awesome, but they are not instant. If you don’t think you can commit, then really, save your money.

Now, enough about Tim and his awesome book, tell me what you think of that video…

If you enjoyed this post, I would appreciate if you share it on Twitter, Facebook or Delicious!

Sounds like and interesting book. How many pages it?

BTW, what accent is that? Sounds Northern English. How far off am I?

Comment by Glen

The book is 218 pages.

As for the accent, I have mentioned here a few times that I’m from Newcastle (north east of England). However, my accent changed a lot since I moved to Cape Town so I don’t really sound much like a geordie anymore.

haha remember the first night i met you.

didn’t understand a thing you said.

but jump and clap doesn’t require words. only glory :)

I’ll think about the book.

But the video is definetely very good. Both the tips, and the way you made it. I use firefox but i haven’t really been active with plugins or add-ons. But the ones you suggested seem quite useful. I have one installed which blocks a couple of websites that i used to spend (waste) a lot of time on. So it’s a bit of a productivity hack.

Comment by Glen

Nice. There is an app for Mac called Self Control which does the same thing.

Thanks for the feedback, Jay!

Comment by Faramarz

What are your thoughts on chrome i have started using it the last few days and find that it is far faster than firefox (except that after this video i might have to go back to firefox

Comment by Glen

I do like the speed of Chrome, but I can’t yet customise it how I want to, so I’m sticking with Firefox for now.

Comment by Tristan Lee

Hey Glen, awesome video. I learned a lot from it and also liked your setup – organized and efficient. Thanks for sharing this!

Cheers buddy!

Hi Glen,

Those are some great plugins and I am going to download down some of them to try it out. Great work on your first video and you do seems serious in it. ;)

Cheers,
Vincent

Comment by Glen

Haha, you would never have said that if I didn’t mention it ;)

Thanks man!

Great vid, got the plugins, setup Google Apps with my sites domain. I’ve been a firefox evangelist for awhile now, nothing better…yet.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge Glen.

Comment by Glen

Awesome Ron. Google Apps is pretty sexy.

Hey there Glen, very nice video. I’m going to have to start doing videos on my Macbook Pro as well for my blog. That is one area I have not cracked yet. Also, that books sounds very good..I will have to check it out for sure.

Cheers!
Dayne

Comment by Glen

Give it a shot man, I would love to check it out.

Did you hear your voice at the end?

I sure did! :-) I must say, that is a really cool sound clip collage for your site! Very very clever!

This is awesome! I’m definitely not brave enough for a video (I can’t even do a picture yet!) but I think it brings a great, personal element to the blog.

Comment by Glen

I can’t wait to see you Dani :D

I only found out your name through another blogger ;)

After having a quick glimpse into your feed reader, I’m actually very curious about the feeds you subscribe.

Even though I’ve read your blog post about websites you usually follow is there any chance you might share a more complete list of your RSS feeds?

Hi Glen,

just bought the book, congrats on your commission ;-)
Just wanted to tell you, please don’t send me a free copy of Cloud Living, since I’ve already bought that from you too :-)

If I have a free wish, just take that copy of Cloud Living, and send it anonimously to someone from who you think might need it but doesn’t has the funds to buy it.

All the best

RD

Comment by Glen

I would say thanks but I think congratulations is more accurate. I know you will really enjoy the book. I eventually put it down after 100 pages to go and eat ;)

That is a very generous offer and I will do that :)

Comment by Steve Weaver

Great video, despite the fact it just reminds me how woefully inadequate my computer skills are so far! What I really appreciate is your honest advice about not buying the book if you won’t or can’t take action on it now. That honesty is what keeps people like me coming back even when most of your posts are way above my skill level.
Thanks!!

Comment by Glen

Hi Steve,

Nice to see people notice I’m nothing like many other bloggers with their spammy tactics :)

Comment by Neal

Married guy could really use that copy of Cloud Living. I will take action and send your my progress as a testimonial.

Comment by Glen

Just send me payment proof and you’ll get your copy of CL within minutes :)

Very nice video, I’ve watched it about 5 times in total now :)
Yep, I got some pre release screenings! Hehe.
Definitely useful, started using Tweetdeck, organising my email folders the way you do and installed the Alexa Sparky toolbar!

Hi Glen.

This video is terrible, in that it is terrible-y good. The way you intro it and roll into the screencasting makes it like an adventure into your desktop, which is action-packed from me who sees the desktop as like a home-land.

If you do another, next time I will be more bold and send the entertaining audio that I recorded but was hesitant about submitting.

Comment by Glen

Man you actually got me with that comment. I only see snippets in wordpress admin ;)

Thanks man, really glad you liked it.

I think :) Diggy missed :) some more of these :) ;)

Ha. Seriously, though, I find a lot of value to these videos and expect to see more. Also, even more important, I think your pacing is good and your explanations clear and concise.

cheers!

Did you notice your blog in Google reader?

Nice video, Glen.

For a future post/video I’d be interested in seeing how you manage your GMail/Reader labels and also how you structure your folders on your hard drive too.

I’m useless at creating a decent system and am always looking to others for help in this area.

Just found your site by the way and loving it so far. I had heard of you and this site before, but I never clicked over because I actually thought you were a Wordpress plugin developer!!! Glad I finally did though because you’re full of knowledge. Expect an e-mail soon with loads of questions… :D

First off, great video. And also thanks for sharing your tools. Tweetdeck and the gmail thing really made my day. However, you are the only one I can’t add to my tweetdeck group. Did you register with another username initially?

Comment by Glen

No, I do have multiple accounts, but that won’t make a difference.

Instead, just enter my name and click ‘follow’ instead of clicking on Save Group. It should reload and then show me as an option.

Comment by Oscar - freestyle

It worked, thank you!

I’m a big fan of RoboForm when it comes to filling in forms. You can set up an identity, select it and it will automatically fill in all the appropriate fields. Easier than doing each individual field. It also manages passwords and I use both the identity and password feature everyday. Huge timesaver!

I also love Google Apps. Did you know it has an archive feature and you can find archived mail under “all mail”? It might keep you from having to use the identity label.

Comment by Glen

I have tried RoboForm but didn’t like it. I can’t remember my reasoning at the time. I might give it another look

Yes, I am aware of that, thanks!

I’ve been a timid background reader up until now.

I ordered the book and sent the receipt to plugin@pluginid.com BTW.

Question (sounds stupid, still asking)- I’m 18 years old. Will it work for me?

Comment by Glen

Hey man, already sent you a copy :)

Of course, age is pretty irrelevant here in my opinion. I was 18 when I started making some serious cash and making big changes in my life.

Comment by Valerie M

Nice video! Cool to see what goes on in your computer :)
Also like I told Diggy … what a nice surprise with the accent you got there. The both of you seem so real now … I don’t have the guts to do a video yet.

I’m also reading Tim and John’s book … so far so good. I’m really liking it. Anyway, just wanted to congratulate you on your first video!

Comment by Glen

I know Diggy would pay good money just to see you say hello on video ;)

Thanks Valerie, and I’m sure you’ll like the book!

Comment by Sam Leung

Hey DJ,
Firstly congrats on a great first video. You’ve made me a fan of Vimeo and as a result of watching your video I immediately signed up to Vimeo. Initially just to comment on your video of which oddly there seems to be two of the same thing, just with different titles?

I don’t think you’re ‘Too serious’ at all. I thought you carried the whole thing out quite well. Did it take a few goes to get it right?

Cheers for mentioning Screenflow and Camtasia. I was curious to see what you preferred to use for screen-capture and editing of video. For anyone that wants a free (and open-source) screencapture I’ve found ‘CamStudio’ to be simple but don’t expect bells and whistles. A google search for it should do that job.

Keep up the brilliant work DJ. Your generousity to share your wealth of knowledge is well appreciated and sets you well above the crowd.

Comment by Glen

Hey Sam,

I deleted the other one about 6 hours ago (it doesn’t have the intro or outro) so unless you checked back then, there should only be one there now.

I actually did this on my second go. The first time the phone started ringing which was right next to me. I was adamant on doing it in as few takes as possible though. I also had to end the video very sharply because the door bell rang. No peace in this house ;)

Thanks for the great comment Sam!

Comment by Katya

Hey Glen can you tell more about this book? Where is it about? Obviously it’s about getting rich….but has it something to do with online marketing? =P

Right now…I’m blinded to other ways of making money. It’s seems like internet marketing is the only EASY way and you know how people like things to be EASY =P

So I’m really curious. Really would appreciate it if you can tell more about the content contained in it.

Thanks in advance.

Katya

Comment by Glen

Not really Katya, it’s more of a general approach which includes a formula and certain principles. Some people described it as a 21st century Think and Grow Rich.

Comment by Katya

I’ve read Think and Grow Rich…It’s about having the right mindset and your beliefs…Kinda like The Secret…;)

I already think I know where this book is about…well sort of ;)

Hey Glen thanks a lot for the review mate, much appreciated.

I have started using the Quirk plugin you mentioned in the video and it is well cool, so thanks for that too!

@ Valerie – Glad you’re enjoying the book. Curious to know where you got it from too? ;-)

Sweet video. Man you need to give me some tips on how to make my gmail look so organized with a logo.

yo braaaah.

this is super exciting.

full next level goodness.

so cool to watch your site grow in massive sprints.

would dig to watch the vid but sa bandwidth… :P

haha. it’s caching now. prolly only be done in like 2 hours.

can’t wait to see what happens when you and diggy team up and make vids.

meltdown times will ensue.

Hey Glenn, What’s the name of the firefox extension you use to fill out forms? That would be very useful.

Comment by Glen

Wow! I like the one where you can automatically check the back links of the website. I put in a lot of time doing that and would be so much faster.

Comment by Sami

Hi Glen, about the book; you mentioned it has a lot of exercises that take time and commitment to do. Are those NLP style exercises or something else? I’m a bit skeptical about the whole NLP thing and haven’t found it very useful (although I don’t doubt it works for some people), so wouldn’t want to pay big bucks just to be disappointed.

Cheers,
Sami

Comment by Glen

No Sami, I would not say they are “NLP exercises” but they are interesting :)

Comment by Tim Brownson Subscribed to comments via email

@ Glen and Sami – To be fair there is one NLP exercise and smatterings of others, but what we attempted to do was mix them in with proven science and explain how and why they work.

On the whole though it’s not a book on NLP as Glen said and if you think it’s BS, there is a money back offer.

Comment by Nathalie Lussier

Hey great video Glen! I hadn’t heard of the alexa sparky plugin, so that was great a tip for me. :)

Oh and all the audio “pluginID” clips at the end sound really cool!

Cheers!

Comment by David Turnbull

Good stuff Glen. Inspired me to create a “live action” video for my blog as opposed to just screencasts as I’ve done in the past. (Should be up in a couple of days.) :-)

Comment by Ivan

thanks for all the tips Glen, very useful :) …hope all is well

Comment by Jonathan Bennett

FYI, the price of the book has been lowered to $47, according to Tim’s web site.

Comment by Glen

Yep, everyone who ordered through me has been offered a refund :)

Hey Glen,
Great stuff. Couple questions…
1. in your gmail, how do you get those INBOX and IDENTITY things that you can check/uncheck to get out of your inbox and into the archive?
2. to get your pluginid email in there, do you set that up through your hosting acct? or do you draw it in via gmail?

thanks bud…

Hey Glen!

Great video! I always like to see how others do things. I knew of some of the plugins you spoke about, but am headed over to download the rest.

I noticed that you said you use Word for your blog posts. Have you ever tried using Google Docs? I have found that it is great for a lot of the same reasons Gmail and Google Reader are.

By the way, I think this is my first comment. I will have to admit that I have been reading and enjoying for a while. I have realized I need to comment more.

Grabbed a couple of those Plugins to use with Firefox. I really can’t see a need to use any other browser.

Thanks for the video. Very well done and helpful

Comment by tkm

Glen,

As always, nice article! I will definitely be checking out those plugins.
