Great article! I am now in the process of not only finding my passions, which I already have a grasp of, but how to work or find a job aligned with them. Having a physical problem I also need to combine what I want with what I can and healthy people should really be thankful if they don't need to do that. Many under-rate the power of health and the possibility to really be phisically able to do anything they want. This is already a blessing. Thanks for this, I'll be spending my 30mins on this later on, now I am very curious. I tweetted this article! It deserves attention! Good luck. Valeria.

I'm going to be totally honest...after reading this and doing the exercise, I cried with happiness for the first time in a very, very long while. Haha, me and my mushy teenage hormones, I guess.

Before, my future was set up just so I could make a living and get by in life. I thought that's what I wanted. But when I grasped the concept of no failure - that I could do whatever I want and be good at it - something burst open. I realized that I just want to be happy in life, and to do what makes me happy - not what's the best finacial choice. My answers were:

1. designing things. I'd draw and paint and photograph, then create short poems/stories about them. It would all have it's own room, too.
- I have no idea where that came from, but I just jotted it down. I've NEVER considered designing things or art as a career; I love to write, so I always assumed I'd be doing that. But these came out instead. I can barely draw, let alone paint. However, I love photography.

2.I'd live in a medium-sized house in the country side, but not too far away from the city. I'd have a lovely, funny husband who loves me for who I am, and two kids; one boy, one girl. I would have sports cars and family cars. I'd paint and photograph for fun and for a living.
- Never thought I'd have so many details set in my imagination for my adult life. Haha.

3.Confidence. Selfless affection. Great humor. A smart, happy take on life. A great, joyous laugh. Their life has no bounds, and they're always happy, always there for you and ready to help.
- I didn't list anyone, just the traits in anyone that I find admiring.

4. happy laugh, happy personality, helps people with love and selflessly.
- this was the greatest shock of all. I've always figured I was a depressed, selfish person to other people. But I'm trying not to think what they think - and it makes me very happy that I see myself this way. I hope it's true.

5. Designing. Art. Helping others. Writing intimate details about a person, about feelings.
- this is great, it gives me a lot of directions!

Thank you so, so much. I know this sounds really sappy but... you're post has made my concept on life much happier. I can't thank you enough. Sorry for this being so long, just thought I'd share the above with you ;)

[...] Living Someone Else’s Dream - I’ve been fortunate enough to have parents who have pretty much given me free will to do what I want with my life. They trust me enough to let me make my own decisions and I definitely think that independence I’ve gained has helped me grow. In fact, I’m going to do the exact same thing for my kids and if you have any I recommend you do the same. However, I know some people are in a situation where they are being pushed towards a certain career path and university course by others when they know it isn’t for them. If that’s you then you either need to get out of that situation or come up with an alternative that keeps you and those pushing you happy. You can’t live your life simply to please others; you have to do what you love. [...]

I agree very much so, the focus of our core passion never changes, we will only find different ways of going about it.

I used the 4 step exercise above and I think I've found my passion.. :) (luckily it was what I always thought it was!) Neat exercise.

I was struggling with the idea of finding my passion for a long time, I used to get so frustrated at myself for not being able to find out what i truly love, but now I accept that as part of getting to know yourself, you may not get to know your true self for a while.. but all will fall in place in due time.

Excellent blog. Keep it up! :)

This is something I am struggling with so very much. It creates such anxiety beacause I would be forever mad at myself if I waste my life and not apply myself to my life. Thank you for the great article.

Hey Glen, sounds to me like you have a really great grasp of what I usually refer to as Curly's Law. I have a series of three posts about exactly this topic - finding your One Thing, or as you put it, your core passion. It's a bit of reading but you can get away with just: http://tinyurl.com/5a7yhu
