Cloud living, a nice irony there...hope your business in selling false hope to people is going well.

I have lived in the the Netherlands and the UK. Both countries have terrible weather! So if you are fine with that, by all means help yourself. Also, both these countries are very inward looking. So if you like a great social life, you WILL be dissapointed.

Having lived in the UK for a number of years (not much longer) I have a developed an acute dislike for the "society" here. How about the London riots of Aug 2011...say no more.

For any Saffas with kids thinking of moving to the UK bear this in mind: Out of 30 EU countries the UK came BOTTOM for quality of life for children. You'll be safe but effing miserable!

Sounds like you had a good time overall. Hope you are still living in the NOW now...lol

It would be good to get your perspective on this memory once you have 10 years behind it. The key is that everyone thinks how they grew up is pretty much normal and I can see why you are keen to get back to the "normality" of your home.

I am orignally from SA and have lived in the UK for ten years now (Not for much longer!). Quite honestly the dull life here can in no way be compared to the real living in SA. I can honestly say that I have developed a deep dislike of the "society" in the UK. It may be "safer", but plucking a single example out of the air; out of a survey of 30 EU countries the UK came BOTTOM for quality of life for children. So any Saffas thinking about coming to the UK with your kids, be prepared to make comprimises that will eat at your soul. I think the London riots of Aug 2011 say it all really...

Hi Glen your story is rather sad sounds to me like you are basing South Africa on your Cape Town experience . I dont blame you but you have only lived in Cape Town as a South African I can safely say you have about 30% an idea of South Africa . Cape Town is notorious for all the things you have mentioned infact I cant stand it and its where my mom and and dad live sometimes.

Had you spent your two years in Jo burg with real Joburg people I guarantee you your story would be opposite South Africa Laid Back thats funny mate really ......Its like me living in NewCastle England then basing that experience as England .excluding London and other totally different cities in UK Good luck in your Growth process.

Good on you sir

I'm a 27 year old South African soon to return home in May from a year away in Australia and New Zealand. I miss home so much. I really liked your post and I'm stoked that my country allowed you the canvas to discover these things through.

I myself also like the Netherlands as a living option. Although home is calling.

All the best

I thought you had made a mistake when you said I was an 'older' version, but then I seen your age ;)

Good luck with it Kevin, feel free to send me an email if you have any questions!
