I’ve said it before and I’ll happily say it again, each of us has amazing potential and a great opportunity to make a real difference in this world. I’m trying to do my part by writing on this site, and making a good income online so that I can help benefit even more people.
That being said, I would be nowhere near the position I’m in now if I hadn’t followed the steps I’ve outlined below, and started living up to my full potential. Our time on earth is short and we don’t know when our luck will run out, so maybe it’s time you started living to your full potential?

You may be well aware of some of these points, but I hope that my personal examples in each point help give you something to relate to and realise how important these steps really are.
Rid Yourself of Internal Excuses – I bet that there’s one excuse you have in your life that is holding you back from doing certain things. They can range from specific excuses like ‘I’m shy so can’t get anywhere in life’ to more common excuses like ‘Good things don’t happen to people like me’. Either way, these excuses are irrelevant and unnecessary.
I used to think that I was too young and didn’t have enough experience to make money online, and then I went on to make over $5,000 in one month at the age of 17. Whatever it is you want to achieve, stop letting your excuses get in the way. They are nothing more than a lie you feed yourself when you wonder why you aren’t reaching your potential.
Stop Selling Yourself Short – Sometimes it’s not even that we have excuses which stop us from getting somewhere, it’s simply the fact that our goals are small and they don’t test our limits. I first wanted to focus on making a steady, liveable income from the internet, and now I want to push that and make some serious cash. Cash that I will use to help charities and expand the reach of this website.
Look at your current goals in life, and magnify them. Increase their difficulty, reduce your chances of success and then start going for what you want. If you’re going to dream, at least dream big. Even if you don’t reach this huge goal, you’re going to get further than you ever would by completing a small one.
Realise Your Dreams Can Become Reality – I can’t think of anything more off putting than someone telling us that we can’t achieve what we want to achieve. But we see it every day don’t we? People moaning about how others seem to get all the luck, the media highlighting one or two people as those who have ‘made it’ and missing out on the billions of other people in the world.
“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right”
- Henry Ford
It’s very likely that someone out there has had the same goals as you and managed to achieve them. Find out who they are and how they did it, then use them as your inspiration. Even if your goal is completely unique, be your own inspiration, be the light for others to see that achieving it is possible.
Set Out a Simple Plan – It amazes me how many people I know have aspirations for where they would like to go in the future, yet have no actual plan on how they would like to get there. Without my current strategy plan in place I would be literally months behind on my schedule compared to where I am now.
I’ve already shared my goal setting approach, but it basically involves a task each Sunday evening to decide what I want to achieve in the week ahead and I try and stick to that as closely as possible. If there’s ever a time I don’t feel like doing an item on the list I ask myself “Do you really want this, do you want the end result?”
Needless to say, it doesn’t take long till I…
Take Action – Quite simply, you’re never going to reach your full potential if you carry on with the exact same lifestyle that you are living today. I’m sorry, but somewhere along the line things will have to change, and you may need to compromise. Around 2 years ago when I started making money online, I was in College from Monday to Friday and I worked 8 hours per day on Saturday and Sunday in a clothes store.
I was exhausted day after day but I would make the most of my time and focus on building websites whenever I could. If I hadn’t taken action back then, I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in now, and I certainly wouldn’t have spent the last 16 months in South Africa, working my dream job.
Don’t Hesitate
We all have this magical spark inside of us, I see it in my friend Candice when she talks about things close to her heart; I see it in my friend Diggy when he struggles to find the meaning of life and I see it in all the great bloggers who try to make a difference in this world. This spark to do more, this passion to really take life by the scruff of the neck and twist it into something amazing and that they’ve created.
Don’t start living up to your potential tomorrow, do it today, even if it means you are cutting short your lunch break. Actually put these steps into action and start being the person you want to be, the person you are meant to be.
Start making your own spark, and change your reality into whatever you want it to be by living up to your potential.
If you enjoyed this post, I would appreciate if you share it on Twitter, Facebook or Delicious!

Yep, you are true, as always. If you want to achieve your full potential, you should start giving your 100% first. Energy loss is prevalent, but it’s not a waste. Thanx for the great tips.
Hey Jaky, you’re welcome! Thanks for your comment
Making our own spark! That’s very interesting statement… spark is contagious…, when we are sparkling, let’s also bring others sparkling their best as well… Thanks for the sparks!
Robert
Hahah, nice enthusiasm Robert
Hi Glen,
I agree. Each one of us has the potential to make a difference. Each one of us has a purpose. Some of us are meant to make a difference on a huge scale and some of us on a smaller scale.
I think the problem is that people are not taught to discover what is it that they love and are passionate about in life. People are taught that they have to make a living and they are not taught how to live.
I don’t think we all have the potential to change the world in the way we want to do it. Of course you can do a lot, but everything what we want?
But I do think we have potential, and if you have it, you should use it! So I do agree with you actually, find your inner spark and let it go out!
Thanks!
Stefan/DSK
I’ve found that through my practice of ‘being present’ and the sedona method, the things I want are a lot more basic. I.e. health, wealth and confidence. But not so much wealth for myself, more the fact that I want to use it to help others.
Obviously, what we want changes as we go through life, although some factors will remain the same. So yes, I do think we can have everything we want if we recognise our true potential. Why not?
I totally agree, know your potentials and get the most out of it!
Just what Nadia said, some of us are meant to make big changes, some small.
i agree with robert, that spark IS contagious, same way you can bring someone down with a negative attitude…we can make a difference in the world, if we start with ourselves
“If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change“
-Man in the mirror by Michael Jackson, very inspiring song
Great post. I totally agree with these points.
And I’m going to bring them into life – next month I’m leaving my current job, starting my own web design business. I can’t wait for that!
Hey Bart, that’s great news. Good luck with your business. A friend of mine has just booked his flight to the States where he hopes to make his income by freelancing
“Start making your own spark, and change your reality into whatever you want it to be by living up to your potential.”
But what is our potential? One of the problems people have is that they view their potential through their current frame of reference. Once they grow they will begin to see new potential. We will never reach or potential because it continually moves away from us. However, that is the great thing about potential. Through growth it is nearly limitless. That’s the way I like to think about it anyway.
Thanks for your thoughts Glen.
Our potential is limitless Stephen. I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging, but it was never in my ’scope’ that I could become one of the most effective internet marketers for brands like Land Rover, UK newspapers and other clients. Yet, those were my clients, even at the age of 18 I was the main person driving traffic to the websites of these big brands.
Or look at the partner situation, some people will have a ‘vision’ of how attractive a partner you can get, I like to think I broke the barries on that quite a bit in South Africa.
So yeah, I believe our potential to be limitless, and I’m going to continue to try and be an example of that.
I have recently found your blog through a link at The Simple Dollar. I am thoroughly enjoying your writing. Today, you linked back to a post today about being the light that gives others permission to shine.
I just wanted you to know that post spoke to my at the seat of my soul and I wanted to say, Thank you.
Hey Clarissa, comments like that really mean a lot to me! I’m glad some of my writing could really help you.

Hahah don’t waste your time man. Thanks a lot, please make sure that R has an awesome birthday for me!
Good article Glen. We all have little sparks within us and when we become awakened and pay attention, it is then that we can take advantage of those bursts and take steps towards our end goals. As we experience more through our years, we are, or should be, constantly changing and then often what we want to achieve changes. We need to keep ourselves in check in relation to our desired goals and decide if we’re making those correct steps towards that end. This path of “living life and being less a spectator” is an ongoing and never ending process of learning experiences.
Hey Denise, great to see you back at the site!
I like that and completely agree. We need to keep a constant check of our progress and situation to see if we are still on the right path.
That spark sure is contagious and motivating, so if you are feeling in a slump find someone with that spark and have a chat with them – TODAY!!
Great post G and thanks for the mention, you are an inspiration!
A great Edward De Bono quote comes to mind here…
“Simplicity before understanding is simplistic; simplicity after understanding is simple”.
Simple living & awareness – you are half way there to reaching your teue potential
Hey Sean, thanks for your comment and sharing that quote! I think I’ll have to read it a few times for it to click
I like this line:
“They are nothing more than a lie you feed yourself when you wonder why you aren’t reaching your potential.”
Good advice here.
Great post Glenn, simple yet effective.
Another great post! This was really inspiring and just what I needed to hear to get me motivated again. Thank you!
Glen,
Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your linking to my blog in your post. Thanks a lot for that.
Sunny you are my favourite Spy
, you’ve got mail!
Glen,
Haha. Spy I am, and there is a sound reasoning behind it. One of the basic concepts in NLP is Modeling. In simple words, its picking the right people who inspire you with their actions and results, and observing what they do and how they create a model of success, and then trying to implement that model in your own endeavours.
And me being an avid seeker of success related techniques, i practice what I find to be of any useful importance. So spying on you is a must, because the fact is that your energy and the results you produce are worthy of modeling my friend.
I have been around a while and I can spot people with a spark in them, and you got it for sure.
So does that explain it well?
By the way, I didn’t get any email from your side.
I wanted to know how you found out about my other website, but I assume you did a simple whos sites are on this server trick. I better set-up another host then
