Glen, I just wanted to personally thank you for this post.

I live a pretty successful location independent lifestyle...and while that sounds like a dream, it can be absolutely terrifying when you realize that there's a MILLION paths to choose from.

I was struggling over the past few months trying to decide (as I always do every year or so) what to do with my life. And as always when I'm confused, I started googling around for advice.

Thank God I found this post. It is 100%, absolutely, fucking SPOT ON!

As I was reading this post, I found myself nodding along the whole time. A lot of the points you made were ones that I've separately learned on my own but I never put them all together. This post helped make everything so clear in my life.

Every amazing opportunity I've had in my life (from advertising to professional filmmaking) was never something I DECIDED on. It flowed from following my interests.

The important thing was that I DID something. That I threw myself completely into whatever I was interested in at the time. And whatever that interest was, it has ALWAYS led to my next, amazing interest and opportunity.

Thank you so much for writing this post and helping me clear up my own thoughts. I wasted years of my life searching for my "passion" or the "one thing" I was supposed to do in my life.

No more. I know from my own experience that if I follow my interests, I'll always end up where I need to be. Thanks for helping me realize that.

P.S. Your blog is f*cking awesome man! This was such a monumental mindshift for me that I'm thinking about writing up my own post with my thoughts on this. Of course, with full references to this post :)

I like the thought behind the post but don't find it helpful. I havent' been able to figure out what to do for a career since I graduated college 19 years ago. I worked as a legal secretary in college, then did non-profit fundraising tried sales and currently back in non-profit fundraising. Most people leave profit for non-profit but I wish I could do something else. Working full time and having a modest income doesn't seem to allow me to pursue a passion even if I knew what it was. I have toyed with trying to start a business but don't have any money to do. Not be able to make a decision has lead me to continue to be a middle manager in a profession I no longer what to do. I admire those who were able find inspiration and change their lives.

Hi Vlad,
I was fortunate to be able to interview two life coaches in a recent post. I know this may sound like a shameless plug but it really lays out what a life coach does, as I really didn't know beforehand. You could also contact either one of the wonderful women I interviewed. By the way, it's a very honorable profession! Good luck!

Best,
Bob

Sweet post, Glen!

I've just been struggling recently with exactly what I want to do in my life (basically my college course stopped exciting me, and while I have a personal development blog, I didn't see an immediate way to develop that a lot more).

Then I looked around and realized my ideal job right now would be life coaching (it's what excites me the most). So I got in touch with Tim Brownson on exactly how to become a life coaching...

Anyway, thanks for this post. You're making me feel more secure that I'm really making the right choice to follow my current passion!

Thanks Glen . . . for finding me on Twitter and for writing such an inspiring post.
As someone a wee bit older than you (with a long list of strange career and persoanl twists and turns), I so appreciate your insight into yourself and that life is short. I have finally followed my passions and ended up with two businesses.

Hi Glen! Great story. I recognize a lot in this from my own life story. By taking chances and an occasional risk, and by following what I thought I liked to do most, I got amazing opportunities and live an amazing life for which I am grateful!

I also think it is important to think about what you want to do with your life. There is no need to take concrete decisions following that question. Just consciously thinking about it is already a big step forward! I also experienced that people often feel the need to define it very specifically, while a more general concept can also work very well. My own is rather simple: I want to live 'Wow!'. And that is what I try to do every day :)
